A safety data sheet is an important hazard-communication document, but it is not a product approval certificate or a complete laboratory analysis. What Is an MSDS or SDS?
MSDS means Material Safety Data Sheet. SDS means Safety Data Sheet. The modern GHS-aligned term is SDS, although many suppliers and buyers still say MSDS in everyday business.
An SDS communicates the known hazards of a chemical substance or mixture and the measures used to handle it safely. It can include product identification, hazardous ingredients, first aid, firefighting, spill response, storage, exposure controls, physical properties, stability, toxicology, disposal, transport, and regulatory information.
For a nail salon, the most useful question is not “Does this product have an SDS?” but “Does the SDS match this exact product, is it current, and does it provide enough information for the way we store and use it?”
What Information Does an MSDS Mainly Check?
Product and supplier identity
Section 1 should identify the product, recommended use, restrictions on use, supplier or responsible party, contact details, and an emergency telephone number. The product identifier should match the bottle, carton, invoice, and purchasing record closely enough to avoid confusing one formula with another.
Hazard classification and label elements
Section 2 summarises the classified physical and health hazards. It may include a signal word, hazard statements, precautionary statements, and GHS pictograms. This is the fastest section to review when deciding how the product should be handled and what staff need to know before use.
Hazardous ingredients and concentration ranges
Section 3 identifies relevant hazardous ingredients and may provide CAS numbers and concentration percentages or ranges. A supplier may lawfully protect certain details as trade secrets under applicable rules, and non-hazardous ingredients may not all appear. Therefore, Section 3 is not necessarily the same as a complete cosmetic INCI list.
Emergency response
Sections 4, 5, and 6 cover first-aid measures, firefighting measures, and accidental-release measures. A salon should know where these instructions are located before a spill, splash, fire, or exposure occurs—not after the event.
Handling, storage, and personal protection
Sections 7 and 8 explain safe handling and storage conditions, exposure limits where applicable, ventilation, hygiene measures, and recommended personal protective equipment. These sections help a business turn general hazard information into daily controls.
Properties, stability, and health information
Sections 9, 10, and 11 describe physical and chemical properties, stability and reactivity, and toxicological information. They can help identify incompatible conditions, decomposition concerns, likely exposure routes, and reported health effects.
Environmental, disposal, transport, and regulatory information
Sections 12 through 15 cover ecological information, disposal considerations, transport information, and regulatory information. The required treatment of these sections depends on the jurisdiction. Section 16 records other information, including the preparation or revision date.

What an MSDS Does Not Prove
- It is not a government approval. The existence of an SDS does not mean a regulator has approved the cosmetic product.
- It is not a complete cosmetic safety report. An EU Cosmetic Product Safety Report has a different purpose, scope, and qualified assessor requirement.
- It is not automatically a laboratory test report. An SDS is normally prepared from formulation and hazard data; it does not necessarily show that the finished batch was analytically tested.
- It does not automatically prove “HEMA-free,” “TPO-free,” or “TMPTA-free.” Section 3 may not list every non-hazardous ingredient, and trade-secret provisions may affect disclosure.
- It does not guarantee safe use under every condition. Risk depends on exposure, quantity, ventilation, technique, storage, curing, and local workplace controls.
- One SDS should not be reused for unrelated formulas. Product identity and composition must match the product being supplied.
How to Review an SDS Before Buying or Using a Nail Product
Use a seven-point check
- Match the identity: compare the product name, code, supplier, and intended use with the bottle and invoice.
- Check the date: review the preparation or revision date in Section 16 and ask for an updated copy if information appears outdated.
- Read Section 2 first: identify the main physical and health hazards before reviewing technical details.
- Compare Sections 2 and 3: make sure the disclosed hazardous ingredients are consistent with the classification.
- Check salon controls: review ventilation, skin and eye protection, hygiene, storage temperature, and light or heat restrictions.
- Plan emergencies: make Sections 4 to 6 available to staff and keep suitable spill materials accessible.
- Record the document: save the SDS with the supplier, product page, order date, and batch information where available.
Common warning signs in a weak SDS
- The product name is too generic to match the item being sold.
- The supplier or emergency contact information is missing.
- Required sections are absent, out of order, or filled only with vague statements.
- The document has no preparation or revision date.
- The hazards in Section 2 conflict with the ingredients or toxicology described elsewhere.
- The language, units, or transport information appears copied from a different product type.

- Ask for the document that matches the exact formula rather than accepting a general sheet for an entire product family.
- Keep current SDS files accessible to staff during working hours.
- Retain the original bottle label and do not decant salon products into unidentified containers.
- Review local workplace, cosmetic, transport, waste, and fire-safety requirements because responsibilities differ by country and business role.

An SDS is a hazard-communication document. Requirements and enforcement differ by jurisdiction, product classification, workplace use, and supply-chain role. Obtain competent local advice where necessary.
