What Does 3-Free Mean? HEMA, TPO and TMPTA Explained

What Does “3-Free” Mean in Nail Products?

“3-Free” is a marketing description, not one globally standardised formula. In traditional nail-polish marketing, the expression has sometimes referred to a different group of three substances. In the Artmiss 3-Free collection, it specifically means that the selected product is presented as free from HEMA, TPO, and TMPTA.

Because the meaning can change from one seller or market to another, buyers should never rely on the front label alone. The product page, ingredient list, supplier documents, and any available third-party test report should identify exactly which substances are covered by the claim.

  • HEMA is a methacrylate monomer commonly associated with adhesion and product performance.
  • TPO is a photoinitiator that helps certain UV/LED systems cure when exposed to light.
  • TMPTA is a multifunctional acrylate used to build a crosslinked cured structure.

Removing these three substances does not mean that a gel contains no acrylates, no photoinitiators, or no potential allergens. A 3-Free product still needs correct application, controlled curing, clean storage, and protection from repeated skin contact.

What Is HEMA?

HEMA is the common ingredient name for 2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate (CAS 868-77-9). It is a small reactive methacrylate that can contribute to adhesion and the cured polymer network in nail products. Its small molecular size can also make uncured exposure important to manage.

Why buyers ask about HEMA

  • Repeated contact between uncured product and skin may contribute to sensitisation and allergic reactions.
  • Flooding the cuticle, curing on surrounding skin, or using an unsuitable lamp can increase avoidable exposure.
  • “HEMA-free” does not automatically mean “allergen-free”; alternative acrylates can also require careful handling.

In the European Union, nail products containing HEMA are restricted to professional use and must carry the warnings “For professional use only” and “Can cause an allergic reaction.” This is a restriction, not a statement that every HEMA-containing nail product is universally banned.

What Is TPO?

TPO is Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide, a photoinitiator used in some light-cured systems. A photoinitiator absorbs light energy and starts the chemical reaction that turns a liquid or gel coating into a cured film.

Why TPO-free claims matter

  • From 1 September 2025, cosmetic products containing TPO may not be placed or made available on the EU market.
  • The European Commission states that professional salons in the EU cannot continue using TPO-containing cosmetic products on clients after that date, including older stock.
  • Buyers outside the EU should still check their own national rules, supplier formulation, label, and import requirements.

A TPO-free gel must use a different curing system. That does not guarantee identical cure speed under every lamp, so technicians should follow the product-specific curing instructions and avoid assuming that one lamp time works for every formula.

What Is TMPTA?

TMPTA is Trimethylolpropane Triacrylate (CAS 15625-89-5). It is a multifunctional acrylate that can help create a dense crosslinked network after curing. The same reactivity that makes it useful in coatings also makes uncured handling and exposure control relevant.

Why TMPTA-free claims are reviewed separately

  • TMPTA is not the same ingredient as HEMA, even though both participate in polymer-forming chemistry.
  • Its EU harmonised classification includes suspected carcinogenicity, skin and eye irritation, skin sensitisation, and aquatic hazards.
  • TMPTA is listed in Annex II of the EU Cosmetics Regulation as a substance prohibited in cosmetic products.

When a product is sold as TMPTA-free, check the full ingredient and test documentation rather than relying on a shortened ingredient name. Similar-looking abbreviations can refer to different substances.

Does 3-Free Automatically Mean Safer?

No single front-label claim can replace correct product use. “Free from” tells you what the supplier says is absent; it does not describe every remaining ingredient or every possible exposure route.

  • Keep uncured gel off the skin and remove accidental contact promptly according to product guidance.
  • Use the lamp type and cure time specified for the formula.
  • Do not mix products and lamps casually when cure compatibility has not been confirmed.
  • Stop using a product and seek appropriate professional advice if irritation or an allergic reaction is suspected.
  • Keep bottles closed, labelled, and protected from heat and direct light.

How to Verify a 3-Free Product

1. Read the exact claim

Confirm that “3-Free” specifically names HEMA, TPO, and TMPTA. Do not assume every brand uses the same definition.

2. Check the ingredient list

Review the complete cosmetic ingredient list. Look for full ingredient names as well as recognised abbreviations. Remember that an ingredient list is formulation information, not a laboratory test result.

3. Review the SDS or MSDS

Section 3 may identify hazardous ingredients and concentration ranges. However, an SDS can legally omit some non-hazardous ingredients or protect certain details as trade secrets, so it should not be treated as a complete cosmetic formula.

4. Check third-party testing

A useful report should identify the tested sample, test method, target substances, reporting limit, result, laboratory, and report date. “Not detected” means the target was not found above the stated method detection or reporting limit; it does not mean mathematically zero.

5. Match the documents to the product

The product name, sample description, supplier, batch information where available, and test report should refer to the same item. A report for one formula should not automatically be applied to an unrelated collection.
